This is kept by a sand timer and puts an intense amount of pressure on players to get their moves into the command line board as quickly as possible.Īs the game progresses and becomes more complex – the game can descend into utter chaos and become incredibly tight. The difficult part in Mechs and Minions is that there is a time limit each turn. While weak individually – if you get swarmed or constantly attacked, they can be lethal. Each minion moves in a specific path as determined by the mission being played. The AI of the minions is very cleverly done in Mechs and Minions. Ruin your day, and you have to do everything in your power to stop them. These are the bad guys – they are here to do one thing. Once you have moved around the board a bit, crashed into friends and got the hang of the game. The game is played on a modular tile board – and the map is different for each mission. With a couple of enhancements on their range or movement, they will never die, except on specific scenarios with a lot of traps or dangerous terrain.Īnd the angry face class has the best summon in the game. Not only do players need to think ahead about how their character will move, but they must also communicate and pay attention to other players at the table – how will your moves affect them and vice versa. And you can long rest and still dish out considerable damage. And you can "command" them to do that in the most effective way. After leveling up a bit (and she does that FAST), you can have 3 ranged summons behind you bombarding the enemies turn after turn. With a bit of careful positioning and minimal planning and support from the other party members, some summons (particularly ranged summons) can survive much longer than that. Losing a card to make an attack or two, and absorb an attack or two, it's not a bad tradeoff for a loss-card-effect in most cases. I think players are used to other RPGs in which the summons are "tanks" that absorb a lot of damage, but in gloomhaven it tends to be the other way, the summoner tends to be the one face-tanking the occasional hit to keep them alive. I think you want the summons to be something they are not - they would be grossly unbalanced if they didn't work the way they do.

Period a one hit kills them often, plus you have burned a card, is it worth it to maybe avoid one hit, and maybe apply poison?.

Originally posted by CostlySpider:From what I have seen summons, just suck. Some classes are better at some scenarios than others but to say any of them flat out suck is, in my experience, wrong. What I'm basically saying 17 classes and nearly 100 scenarios, sometimes you get a bad mix of abilities for a particular task. Fill the path up with allies so they have nowhere to move to until you clear down some enemies. Playing the TT board game we had failed hard against the Cistern scenario a number of times due to group composition until our summoner was the MVP and cleared the final room in one card.Īnother scenario where you escort an NPC ally that is constantly running ahead of the group.

Monster AI is a difficult subject in the board game, full of edge cases that are not immediately intuitive until you understand them.

I would also say that digital doesn't highlight the monster AI rules well enough outside of the How to Play rules section which I doubt many digital players have read and understood fully. Summoner is a tricky class to play well for sure as It needs a good knowledge of monster movement rules.
